Cost:  $60

What promises to become one of the most talked-about and remembered events of the ARCS year is just around the corner. On Tuesday, October 28, 2008 members and guests will gather in one of San Diego’s iconic architectural treasures, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, to honor the 2008-09 ARCS Scholars. The afternoon will begin with an optional tour of the Salk, followed by a gathering in the Foyer, and a program including the introduction of the scholars and remarks by Dr. Terrence J. Sejnowski, Professor and Laboratory Head of the Computational Neurobiology Laboratory at the Institute.

Following the program there will be an opportunity to visit with the scholars and view posters describing their research. Elegant food stations will tempt every taste. The menu includes an assortment of South American tapas, Argentinean-style skewered marinated beef and chicken, a grilled quesadilla station, fresh halibut ceviche, sweet potato and green bean salad, and grilled banana and pineapple over vanilla bean ice cream. The Foyer will be transformed into an elegant bistro reflecting the nearby Pacific Ocean. The setting will encourage visits to the multiple food stations and table hopping -creating opportunities to visit with the scholars, ARCS members and guests.

The Salk Institute was established in the 1960s by Dr. Jonas Salk who selected the world-renowned architect Louis Kahn as the person who could best design the facility that he envisioned. Construction began in 1962 on land donated by the City of San Diego and was completed in 1967.

The Salk web site describes Kahn’s creation as follows: Two mirror-image structures flank a grand courtyard and look out upon the Pacific Ocean. One can see the impact of Kahn’s architecture in the courtyard with his imaginative use of space and his high regard for natural light. In response to Salk’s request that the Institute provide a welcoming and inspiring environment for scientific research, Kahn flooded the laboratories with daylight. Each building is six stories tall. Salk also insisted that materials chosen would last for generations with only minimal maintenance. Concrete, teak, lead, glass and special steel were the materials of choice, and today, the buildings look much like they did in the 1960s. The open courtyard of travertine marble acting as a façade to the sky adds to the monumental nature of the building, now designated as an historical site. In 1992, the Salk received the American Institute of Architects Twenty-Five Year Award.

Major areas of scientific study at the Salk focus on: Molecular Biology and Genetics, Neurosciences, and Plant Biology. Knowledge acquired in Salk laboratories provides new understanding and potential new therapies and treatments for a range of diseases—from cancer to AIDS, from Alzheimer’s disease to cardiovascular disorders, from anomalies of the brain to birth defects. Studies in plant biology may one day help improve the quality and quantity of the world’s food supply.
Don’t miss this exciting and special event.  We look forward to seeing everyone at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies on October 28!
