The M2M SIG Presents…
One of the barriers to full m2m adoption is the issue of security. In this panel discussion we will explore a more practical side of m2m and security – mainly how to identify the threat vectors for specific m2m applications and then deliver the right solution in order to make it most economical. Our focus will be on discussing the need for security and the techniques that can or should be used, keeping in mind the cost vs. benefit of the security on typically resource-constrained M2M devices.
There is still little understanding of what an “end-to-end” security solution means and given that an m2m system is made up of components that include the devices, the network, the platforms and operating systems, as well as connections to the enterprise systems, it makes it that much more difficult to create that end-to-end solution. This quote recently is a good summary of this topic: “If the reaction to the new security threats is simplistically to add even stronger protection, then the cost of that additional security will result in M2M solutions that are not economically viable.”
PANELISTS:

Ian Allison is the lead Offensive Security Engineer at ViaSat Inc. He has actively worked in the fields of penetration testing, cyber ranges/war gaming, embedded systems vulnerability discovery, cloud computing security and large scale Linux systems security, since 2004. Ian has worked with various industry partners helping them to understand the cyber vulnerabilities and risks associated with their systems and the corresponding technical solutions to overcome their design weaknesses. He holds a Master of Science in Information Security and has active CISSP, GSEC, GPEN and CEH certifications. In addition, Ian is currently pursuing his PhD in Information Security. His current research areas include embedded systems vulnerability discovery and analysis.
Phillip Brown
Member Technical Staff, Standards, InterDigital Communications, Inc.
Phil has been with InterDigital for three years, having joined the Standards group in June, 2011. Phil has been working in software development (with an emphasis on operating systems and embedded system design) for over 30 years since leaving Oregon State University, as well as being involved in cellular and wireless technology since 1987 and active in telecom standards since 1993. He has participated in and chaired Working Groups in numerous standards bodies (including 3GPP, 3GPP2, ETSI, TIA) and trade groups (such as CDG, OMA, SCF, WFA). Phil has been active in ETSI TC SmartM2M (since joining InterDigital) and in the one M2M global partnership project (since its inception in September, 2012).
David Prill
Verizon Partner Program Development Manager, Verizon Wireless
Dave Prill is a Partner Program Development Manager supporting Verizon Wireless’ M2M Resale line of business. He calls upon his 15 years of telecommunications experience to help partners build turn-key solution bundles incorporating cellular data services, ultimately sold in B2B and consumer channels. His expertise in WAN engineering and design, application engineering, emerging technology strategy, and mobility aid him in designing low-latency, secure cellular architectures, delivering lowest cost networks to his partners. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical Engineer) from Vanderbilt University.
