Augmented Reality: Is It Real?

Augmented Reality (AR) is a new technology that’s promising to change the way we interact with the world. The technology combines elements from the physical and the virtual world to create new experiences at home, in business, on the go, and in between. While we’ve heard about the exciting applications to come, few have materialized. But at this CommNexus consumer electronics SIG event, two companies actively involved in AR, Qualcomm and Wowwee, will show us the new products they are creating, talk about what’s really coming, and discuss the challenges the technology faces. You’ll have a chance to ask questions and learn much more.  Join us for this exciting introduction to Augmented Reality. It may change the you think about the virtual world and the real world.

Mike Gonzales
Creative Director and Brand Digital Manager,
 Wow Wee USA Inc.

When the topic of careers comes up in conversation, Mike is often mistaken as the real life inspiration for the movie “Big.” He currently wears multiple hats as both Creative Director and Brand manager for Wow Wee’s AppGear. Wow Wee is an innovative high tech toy company that has been redefining “next generation” toys for years.

As Creative Director, Mike’s role is to oversee creative development, innovation and production throughout the company. Working with the California design office, Hong Kong R&D office, and factories in China, Mike is responsible for driving the creative vision and managing creative development of AppGear’s Digital initiatives, high tech toys, Robotics and consumer electronics. As Brand Manager, Mike is responsible for the overall development of AppGear, a complete line of Apps that interact with toys, overall digital development and applications. His objective is to set strategy for the line’s concept, development, sales and marketing. In addition, Mike coordinates with outside developers and oversees production and manufacturing.

Mike brings 20 years of experience in both the creative and digital fields.  Working with some of the top names in the game industry, Mike created worlds and designed game play for companies including Atari, 3DO, Crystal Dynamics, Angel Studios and Rockstar. His development career has spanned every consol from the Sega Genesis up to the Xbox360. After working in the corporate gaming world, Mike started his own company, consulting for companies such as BunkSpeed and Honda Motor Corporation before meeting Peter Yanofsky, owner of Wow Wee. After several projects and several trips to Hong Kong, Mike joined the Wow Wee team in 2006, developing hits like TriBot, Paper Jamz and Light Strikes. Besides 3D modeling, animation, toy and game design, Mike is also an avid filmmaker. This passion grew out of his love for movies and storytelling. Mike earned a Bachelor of Arts in Design for TV, Film and Theater from San Diego State University.

His passion and vision to create new worlds has served him well, helping to shape WowWee’s new digital direction; building the bridge between the real world play experience and the digital world. Oh, and if you ask, Mike doesn’t have bunk beds but is still thinking about getting that trampoline.
